Gamescom Opens in Germany as 60 Chinese Game Developers Converge

On August 26, Gamescom 2026 officially kicked off at the Koelnmesse in Cologne, Germany. Following the retirement of E3, Gamescom has emerged as the world's largest gaming industry event. At this year's exhibition, China's gaming industry shone brightly, with a record-high 60 Chinese game publishers and developers gathering at the venue. At the highly anticipated Opening Night Live, Chinese games made a strong showing, making frequent headline-grabbing appearances in the trailer showcase and drawing significant attention from international media and players worldwide. Industry insiders note that Chinese game companies are demonstrating an increasingly strong influence in the global market.

The renowned international gaming media outlet Game File pointed out that although the Opening Night Live trailer showcase concluded with titles from top Japanese and Polish studios, Chinese game studios appeared far more frequently than those from any other country. During the showcase, a diverse array of Chinese games took the stage, including the realistic fantasy co-op action game Primordial Knot, the anime-style open-world urban game Infinity, the Arthurian legend-inspired action game Tide of Oblivion, the animal-rebellion-themed Animal Punk, the Anti-Japanese War shooter The Resistors, and Showa American Story, which the media dubbed "an incredibly wild Chinese game." Game File emphasized that these titles span various genres, from fantasy action to WWII shooters, and are not confined to a single visual style. The lineup includes both mobile games and heavyweight titles targeting console and PC platforms. More importantly, all these games were independently developed by domestic Chinese studios. The outlet commented, "China is flexing its muscles at Gamescom."

Chinese games also proved highly competitive in the award nominations announced at Gamescom. Specifically, Tide of Oblivion was nominated for Most Epic and Best Sony PlayStation Game; Escape from Duckov was nominated for Most Entertaining; and OPUS: Heart of the Mountain was nominated for Most Wholesome, Games for Impact, and Best Nintendo Switch 2 Game. Notably, all five nominees for Best Mobile Game were from Chinese publishers. South Korea's largest economic daily, Maeil Business Newspaper, reported that China has virtually become the "protagonist" of this year's Gamescom. Chinese games hold a crucial position in the exhibition lineup, showing remarkable progress in both quality and quantity, and demonstrating strong potential to compete on equal footing with established studios from the US, Japan, and elsewhere. An industry insider stated bluntly, "I think China has once again demonstrated its formidable strength this year."

Compared to Europe, the US, and Japan, China's gaming industry started later and once lagged behind international giants in R&D and production capabilities. Although domestic companies have long maintained a strong competitive edge in mobile gaming, for a long time, there was a lack of single-player games with sufficient international influence. In 2024, the domestic AAA game Black Myth: Wukong was released and achieved massive global success, marking a crucial first step for China's single-player games. Its success is attributable not only to the continuous accumulation and advancement of game development technologies in China and strong support from industrial policies, but also to the inevitable result of economic and social development driving increased consumer spending power.

At gamescom dev, held on August 24, Amir Satvat, founder of the industry non-profit community ASGC, delivered a keynote speech. He noted that China's gaming industry is developing vigorously. From 2024 to the first quarter of 2026, the Asia-Pacific region's share of hiring in the gaming industry increased by 10 percentage points, with China accounting for the majority of this growth. Satvat further pointed out that the scale of China's gaming market continues to expand, with China contributing 42% of the global growth in PC gaming revenue in 2025. During the Spring Festival, over half of the monthly active users on the Steam platform were from China. He stressed that the gaming industry can absolutely no longer afford to ignore the Chinese market.

Last month, Zhang Yijun, Executive Vice Chairman of the China Audio-Video and Digital Publishing Association and Director of the Game Publishing Committee, released the China Game Industry Report for January-June 2026. Data shows that in the first half of 2026, actual sales revenue in the domestic gaming market reached 188.45 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 12.17%. As of June, the scale of gaming users in China reached 684 million, a year-on-year increase of 0.82%. The report also revealed that from January to June, actual sales revenue of domestically developed games in the domestic market reached 163.356 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 16.31%. Sun Shoushan, Chairman of the China Audio-Video and Digital Publishing Association, stated that China's gaming industry is entering a new phase characterized by "steady growth, quality first, refined operations, and ecological synergy." To maintain momentum and avoid the current rapid development becoming a "flash in the pan," the entire Chinese gaming industry still faces the challenge of continuing to produce high-quality works and building a sustainable ecosystem. Overcoming the "difficult uphill climb" is not the end, but a brand-new beginning for Chinese games to step onto the world stage and compete in the global gaming market.
