On September 2, 2026, Kiaf SEOUL, South Korea's largest art fair, and Frieze Seoul, a globally renowned art fair, officially opened in tandem at COEX Seoul. The concurrent staging of these two premier international art events not only reaffirms Seoul's position as a focal point of the global art world but also injects robust momentum into the art markets across Asia and beyond. The two fairs have brought together over 300 top-tier galleries from 30 countries and regions, presenting a spectacular showcase of visual and cultural excellence.
Now in its fifth edition, Frieze Seoul has demonstrated formidable global appeal as an internationally recognized art fair brand. This year's edition features 133 galleries from 30 countries and regions. The exhibitor lineup boasts heavyweight international galleries such as Gagosian, Hauser & Wirth, David Zwirner, Pace, White Cube, Lisson Gallery, and Thaddaeus Ropac, presenting classic and latest masterpieces by numerous leading artists. Alongside them, prominent local galleries including Hyundai Gallery, International Gallery, Gana Art, Hakgojae, and Johyun Gallery are showcasing the vibrant development and unique appeal of Korean contemporary art to the world. Frieze Seoul runs through September 5.
Organized by the Korea Art Gallery Association, Kiaf SEOUL also boasts an equally stellar lineup. This year's edition gathers 175 galleries from 18 countries, with local Korean galleries accounting for a dominant 127. Leading domestic galleries such as Hyundai Gallery, International Gallery, Gana Art, Hakgojae, and Arario Gallery, alongside numerous renowned overseas galleries, are all in attendance, offering a comprehensive showcase of the deep heritage and diverse ecosystem of the Korean art market. Kiaf SEOUL runs through September 6, providing visitors with ample time to explore the fair.
In terms of programming, Kiaf SEOUL demonstrates a profound commitment to the diversity of the art ecosystem. The fair has introduced several special sections, including "Kiaf PLUS," dedicated to emerging galleries and young artists, and "Kiaf HIGHLIGHTS," a project supporting participating galleries in curating artist presentations. Additionally, "Kiaf PORTRAIT," a documentary film project focusing on the artistic worlds of Korean Dansaekhwa masters Park Seo-Bo and Kim Tschang-Yeul, will be screened concurrently, offering audiences an intimate look into the creative journeys of these artistic luminaries.
Notably, anchored by this year's theme of "Coexistence," Kiaf has specially curated the thematic exhibition "HUMAL." Masterminded by Kiaf Creative Director Koo Ho Chung, the exhibition delves into the complex relationships between humans and animals, as well as humans and technology. Pushing the boundaries of exhibition formats, Kiaf has embraced bold innovation by leveraging Augmented Reality (AR) technology to extend the physical exhibition into the virtual realm through the "VIRTUAL VITAL" project. This initiative breaks the constraints of traditional physical spaces, delivering an immersive, cross-disciplinary art experience.
Regarding visitor access and city-wide engagement, both art fairs opened their VIP previews for collectors and industry professionals on September 2, with public admission commencing on September 3. To maximize the broader impact of the fairs, a series of "Frieze Week" events will be held across Seoul during the fair period, encompassing gallery partnerships, media art projects, and a rich array of cultural programming. Meanwhile, Kiaf will host a special classical music performance featuring acclaimed South Korean pianist Seong-Jin Cho on September 4, further promoting the cross-pollination of fine art and music to create a multi-dimensional sensory experience.
Furthermore, Seoul's renowned gallery districts, including Euljiro, Hannam, Cheongdam, and Samcheong, will simultaneously host "Neighborhood Night" events. This initiative aims to transcend the physical boundaries of the exhibition venues, extending the artistic atmosphere into the city streets and forging a broader, more engaged platform for domestic and international visitors, gallerists, artists, and cultural professionals.
In recent years, the global influence of the South Korean art market has continued to surge. Bolstered by a robust gallery ecosystem, a dynamic collector base, and strong governmental cultural support, Seoul has firmly established itself as a premier art hub in Asia. The consecutive co-location of Kiaf SEOUL and Frieze Seoul over the years has not only drawn top-tier international galleries and collectors to Korea but also significantly accelerated the internationalization of local artists. The simultaneous launch of this year's dual fairs sends a clear message of a steadily developing, open, and inclusive Korean art market, poised to further invigorate confidence and transaction activity across the Asian and global art markets.
